A centre for space innovation

The North East Space Skills and Technology Centre (NESST) will be a world-leading space skills, research and technology centre in the North East of England.

It will be a “game-changer” for the UK space economy. NESST will provide state-of-the-art R&D and educational facilities for the space sector in a refurbished building in Newcastle city centre comprising of purpose-built space designed to encourage collaboration and interaction across the space cluster.

NESST will serve as a hub for advanced research and development (R&D) and innovation in areas including optical satellite communications, space weather and space-based energy. It will create new technologies and intellectual property (IP). It is expected to directly support the creation of over 350 jobs and inject over £260 million into the North East economy over the next 30 years becoming a catalyst for the wider development of the space sector in the North East region.

An ambition to further regenerate the area of Newcastle, on the edge of Northumbria’s city campus, surrounding the NESST building with state of the art incubator and innovation space for business enabling collaboration, research and development and new job opportunities locally.
