Renovation project to transform the 140-year-old Fenwick flagship department store in the heart of the City Centre, phased over five years with completion by 2026
To mark its 140th anniversary and coinciding with the burgeoning inward investment into the City, Fenwick is in the midst of a major £40m refurbishment programme to transform its flagship department store in the heart of the Retail Core on Northumberland Street and Eldon Square.
Two significant internal atria have been unveiled showcasing the retail and hospitality offer together with a complete renovation of the ground floor Beauty Hall. In 2024, a new curved glass shopfront on Northumberland Street will be revealed, which will feature central entrances on Northumberland Street opening views from the street into the store.
The renovation of the frontage, by Mailen Design, coincides with Newcastle City Council’s programme to deliver major improvements to the surrounding external public realm, on Northumberland Street and Brunswick Place.
In conjunction with Monument Mall and the City Council, Fenwick was instrumental in creating an elevated pedestrianised street, with modern alfresco restaurants and an exceptional florist opening out from the Southern flank of the store onto Brunswick Place. Further new bars and restaurants are planned inside the store, alongside the acclaimed Food Hall.
Fenwick offers experiential pop-ups such as Bistro Greggs, which captured global media attention and quickly sold out, as well as its much-celebrated Santa on the Roof, which has become a must family experience every Christmas. In 2024, Fenwick customers will see experiences such as Newcastle United & Adidas shop-in-shop, on the back of its recent collaboration with the football club and much more.
