Baltic Quarter

A place for immersive technology

Baltic Quarter is home to a thriving tech community of start-ups and scale-ups as well as award-winning Gateshead College and the pioneering council-owned District Energy Centre & Net Zero Network.

The last five years has seen continued investment in buildings and critical infrastructure on Baltic Quarter including PROTO (Europe’s first dedicated centre for emerging technology), Riga (Grade A offices), a new tree-lined boulevard linking the Quays to the road network, and a 1,000-space multi-storey car park.

The District Energy Centre is also setting the blueprint for next-generation district energy, integrating heat and power generation and distribution with energy storage while providing national grid services.

Baltic Quarter is located immediately south of Gateshead Quays with the majority of the land owned by the Council. A new masterplan will guide future development of the site with capacity for c1,000 new homes, c450,000 sq. ft commercial accommodation, hotels and ancillary uses.

In January 2026, Gateshead Council signed a pre-development agreement with Muse Places, supported by supply chain partners ECF, to create a new neighbourhood with around 1,600 homes, as well as new places to work, shop, eat, relax and spend time as a community.

Baltic Quarter presents a fantastic opportunity to continue the growth of a vibrant urban quarter within NewcastleGateshead city centre.
