City Gateway East

A place to power the space race

City Gateway East is a game-changing transformation programme led by Northumbria University in the city centre of Newcastle.

Anchored by two major development projects, the North East Space Skills and Technology Centre (NESST) and the Centre for Health and Social Equity (CHASE), the ambition for City Gateway East is to build a new urban hub around state-of-the-art education facilities.

NESST is being brought forward by Northumbria in partnership with UK Space Agency and Lockheed Martin Space UK and will become a catalyst for the development of the UK space sector from North East England.

The project is expected to directly support the creation of over 350 jobs and inject over £260 million into the North East economy over the next 30 years.

CHASE is a flagship development bringing academics working on health, social care, education, wellbeing and equity issues together in a new state-of-the-art hub with world-class clinical skills facilities.

The 160,000 sq. ft scheme is expected to open by 2027 and promises to deliver a net present social value of over £250m.

Northumbria is looking to work in partnership with Newcastle City Council to unlock plots of development land around NESST and CHASE, with a requirement for at least 1,000 student accommodation units just one of the investment opportunities on offer.
